Family History Resources
Here are links to some of my favourite resources!
Family Trees
Ancestral Quest is the family tree program I use. I love the ease of use and great features. It will also “talk” to FamilySearch’s Family Tree, so you don’t have to enter data twice.
FamilySearch Tree is a collaborative online world family tree. You see your part of it. Anyone can add information, photos, stories and memories about their ancestors. The system will also automatically give you “record hints” based on the information on your ancestor’s Person Page.
Geneanet has over 1 million family trees (many from France).
Databases
FamilySearch contains the FamilySearch Family Tree, Research Wiki I’ve already mentioned. It also contains books, research records and more.
Ancestry contains over 32,000 record collections from around the world. Most are keyword searchable. If you find one record relating to your ancestor, the system will generate other record matches based on that information—this is so helpful as it cuts down on manually searching for matching records.
FindmyPast this site is primarily for UK research. It also contains some records for Ireland, India, Australia, and the United States.
MyHeritage has many record collections, family trees and other resources. I love their feature that lets users upload and colourize black-and-white photos with the touch of a button!
FamilySearch Wiki is so useful! It contains 95,584 articles covering research in many countries and localities. Each country has an article page that discusses how to research that particular place. It also contains a list of online research sources for each locality.
Newspapers
Newspapers.com contains 20,700 newspapers (mainly from the United States) from the 1700s–2000s.
The British Newspaper Archive contains digitized UK newspapers from 1800 up to the 1950s. It is a wealth of resources including family notices, obituaries, letters, advertisements and articles. (Note: Contains an affiliate link)
